Sigma Xi Volunteer Policy

1. The Society provides the Online Leadership Center as a service to our members in support of their volunteer scientific leadership in their community and around the world.
2. The Sigma Xi member that registers through this site give explicit permission to the Society to share their contact information and availability with those partners with volunteer opportunities within the member’s stated area of interest. The member may also choose through this site to offer their volunteer service to specific and/or new opportunities of interest to them, and grants permission to the Society to communicate their interest in that specific opportunity.
3. The actual agreement, ultimate qualification for meeting specific volunteer requirements, communication and acceptance between the member and the organization seeking assistance are the responsibility of the member and the soliciting organization. Sigma Xi assumed responsibility only for the timely communication of opportunity and member response. By submitting an online opportunity for service, the soliciting organization agrees to promptly respond to all volunteer offers and providing all the necessary information to the all qualified volunteers.
4. Registered members may receive regular communications about current and future volunteer opportunities based on their stated areas of interest.
5. Partners and organizations may require special skills, time availability, and police records screening from members volunteering for their specific project or service. Any costs for travel required, police record screenings, and any other expenses incurred by the member in the performance of these services are the responsibility of the member or, if mutually agreed to, the charitable organization. The Society assumed no responsibility of expenses of members in the performance of voluntary service.
6. All organizations submitting specific or general appeals for volunteers through this site confirm that their opportunities for service by Sigma Xi members are legitimate, legal, and will not place the member at risk of physical harm or inappropriate and unadvised liability.
7. Please allow two weeks for the completion of the review and posting of new volunteer opportunities.
8. Sigma Xi may offer specialized training opportunities to assist members in fulfilling specific volunteer opportunities (e.g., interviewing and judging youth science fairs or Olympiads, student scientist and science teacher of the year competitions). These training opportunities will be publicized on this website and announced to members interested in related activities via email contact.
9. Members may change or update their profiles at any time.
